About 14 EMS

In the early years of the Covington Fire Company the station was primarily Fire and Rescue oriented. As time went on a few people tried to implement ems into our station by suggesting a QRS (quick response service). This  didn't go over very well and was eventually discontinued.

More time passed and Scott Forster and Chris Brazen got together and researched the idea of starting an ambulance and what was needed.  With the help of Joe Laggan, Scott Forster and Chris Brazen filled out all the needed paperwork and made a list of needed equipment and supplies.  The fire company bought a 1989 PL Custom type 3 ambulance, which was located by Jim Serfoss and he was appointed Captain when the ambulance went into service.  Jim's EMS Officers were Stacey Lemoncelli, Dave VanWhy, and Kris Smith.  Covington Fire Company Ambulance was then finally in service and helping everyone in the township. A duty crew system was used so people weren't overwhelmed and members took some form of EMS related provider classes, usually Emergency Responder or EMT.

As call volume increased it was discovered that there was a need for a 2nd unit so a committee was formed consisting of Lee Powell, Kris Smith, Mike Chmielewski, Mike Festa and Joe Chmielewski to do their homework and design a new ambulance. Months of meetings went on and the committee settled on going with Wheeled Coach with the representitive being Mr. Lee Chappel from neighboring Station 54. As the unit became closer to completion Lee Powell and Joe Chmielewski took a trip to Winter Haven Florida to get a tour of the plant and get a preview of the new rig. The new unit arrived and after a few corrections, delivery was accepted. The new unit was designated Ambulnce 14-8 with Lackawanna county comm center and Covington was a 2 ambulance squad. Presently we are still a 2 ambulance squad with 10 EMTs, 2 First Responders and 2 Emergency Responders. We are AED certified with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Health and we average around 300 calls a year.

  EMS NEWS

EMA of Lackawanna county has recently given 2 EMS "GO KITS" to EMS. These kits each contain 3 tyvek suits, gloves, duct tape, respirator masks with spare filters, disposable stethoscopes and bp cuffs and 1 size fits all rubber boots and goggles. These are to be used in a biohazard incident and not to restock the units. There will be a training on these coming up soon.
